To this end, the institution strives to establish new areas of study and new education centers, including the recent P.Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Center for Silk Road Studies.
Launched in April of 2017, the Tang Center serves as the United States’ first institutionalized facility focused on the study of the Silk Road. The center promotes the research and teaching of the various cultures that thrived along the ancient Eurasian trading route, most notably Buddhism, and provides students with the history and significance of the Silk Road.
Through the Tang Center, students and faculty at UC Berkeley will be able to receive funding for their fellowships and fieldwork at museums and excavations. Workshops and conferences also will be held at the center to provide students with updates on recent discoveries from notable scholars.
